Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the construct validity of the Unethical Behavior Scale and its subscales on the Matrix -- Predictive Uniform Law Enforcement Selection Evaluation (M-PULSE) Inventory. It was hypothesized that the M-PULSE Inventory Unethical Behavior Scale and its subscales (Lack of Personal Integrity, Perceived Lack of Integrity for the Department, and Amorality) would correlate with an existing measure purporting to measure related constructs. Due to its historical use in police officer selection and the wide body of literature on its psychometric properties, the MMPI-2 was selected for this comparison.;The Lack of Personal Integrity subscale was expected to correlate with the following MMPI-2 scales: Amorality (Ma1), Need for Affection (Hy2), and Social Responsibility (Re). The Perceived Lack of Integrity for the Department subscale was expected to correlate with the following MMPI-2 scales: Antisocial Attitudes (ASP1), Misanthropic Beliefs (CYN1), Interpersonal Suspiciousness (CYN2), Need for Affection ( Hy2), Social Responsibility (Re), and Moral Virtue (Pa3). The Amorality subscale was expected to correlate with the following MMPI-2 scales: Moral Virtue (Pa3) and Misanthropic Beliefs (CYN1). The M-PULSE Inventory Unethical Behavior scale was expected to correlate with all the above MMPI-2 scales by virtue of it being the parent scale.;A Pearson Product Correlation revealed correlations between r = -.335 and r = .306 (df -- 2862), with significant correlations ranging from weak to medium power. At best, approximately 11% of the total variance was shared by two of the selected variables. The directionality of the correlations was notable, as many were positive when expected to be negative, and vice versa. Results of the present study provided limited support for the construct validity of the M-PULSE Inventory Unethical Behavior scale and its subscales as measured by the selected MMPI-2 scales.
