Abstract/Summary:
This participatory communication research incorporates the performance paradigm. It investigates the efficacy of using Ngoma dialogue circles as an HIV/AIDS intervention among Kenyan youth. The present study, involving about 70 participants, was conducted at Murray Girls and Kenyatta Boys High Schools in Kenya's Taita/Taveta District. Using a grounded theory approach, this study formulates a Creative Ngoma Dialogue Circles (CNDC) communication strategy. The main findings of this dissertation are as follows: CNDC helped mobilize Kenyan youth from the position of Mchezewangoma, a passive spectator during the Ngoma/dialogue, to become Mchezangoma, an activated participant who takes part in the action. The use of Wachemshangoma (peer educators) reduced the cultural distance between the HIV/AIDS resource person and the youth. CNDC used local languages appropriate to Kenyan youth, positively impacting its target audience. This study recommends its application in other Kenyan schools.
