Exploring the theory-practice gap: Applications to health information management/technology education and training

Although research on the theory-practice gap is available across multiple disciplines, similar studies focusing on the profession of health information management/technology (HIM/T) are not yet available. The projected number of qualified HIM/T needed with advanced skills and training suggests that skillful use of electronic health records (EHR) is a requirement for student success in HIM/T fields. Using EHR weighs significantly on the need and role of the HIM/T educator level of competence in the successful integration of EHR theoretical knowledge and practical skill sets. This descriptive correlational quantitative study examined whether a theory-practice gap exists in HIM/T training programs, specifically regarding the use of EHR, and whether use of EHR in training programs is associated with the HIM/T educator's background. This study targeted HIM/T educators from the 217 HIM/T programs with accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education Association. A total of 111 participants responded to the survey. Findings can be used to support effective training for highly qualified HIM/T professionals as the health care industry rapidly shifts from a paper- to electronic-based health care record system. The study findings revealed a strong significance between the HIM/T educator's level of education and type of certification as it relates the amount of time and the depth of EHR topic integration. Two other major areas of significance the study revealed were the relationships between the certification held by the HIM/T educator and time allocated to the integration of EHR theory and practice, and competence as it relates to student success. It is intended for this research to help educators and administrators devise curriculums that masterfully integrate a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical sets to ensure students are prepared to meet the health care industry demands and the HIM/T profession expectations.
