Abstract/Summary:
The best practice for providing specialized training in clinical health psychology at the doctoral level was investigated. The purpose of this study is to offer a description of these findings. The background of clinical psychology in general, and the current movement within the field toward greater collaboration with the medical field has prompted a paradigm shift within psychology. Over the past three decades, this shift has indicated the importance, validity, and need of well-trained clinical health psychologists. This study utilized examination of relevant literature on this topic, qualitative data gathered from existing programs offering health psychology training, and consultation with directors of health psychology postdoctoral training programs. The combination of these elements resulted in a blueprint to guide doctoral programs in clinical psychology in developing a specialized training track in clinical health psychology.
