Abstract/Summary:
Over the past 30 years, China's chemical industry has evolved and is currently at the stage of maturity; the major contributor to this development has been multinational chemical manufacturers (MCMs). Much has happened in China's chemical industry since 1978 when China opened its economy to the world. While recent developments suggest the Chinese government is moving toward becoming a self-sufficient chemical industry, the question becomes whether MCMs in China will remain profitable and sustainable in years to come. The purpose of the study was to assess the opportunities and risks facing MCMs in China based on the current economic situation, industry climate, and government plan. The researcher utilized a qualitative phenomenological approach to gather and analyze data, an approach meant to explore and understand the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to social or human problems. The results showed that despite all the challenges, China remains a profitable zone for MCMs. Finally. this researcher recommends further research be conducted into the challenges and opportunities that may surround chemical park relocation to Western China as well as a comparison of labor costs in China's chemical industry to labor costs in the United States and European nations.
