Abstract/Summary:
Research on project management challenges appears to have been primarily focused on projects in the research and development, business administration, and construction environments. Most of these studies have focused on establishing a relationship between key success factors and project performance. The purpose of this mixed-mode explanatory sequential study was to examine the existence of a correlation between four prioritized KSFs and the successful implementation of maintenance projects in Arizona mines. The design of the study involved the determination of correlational relationships between four predictor variables; KSF Personnel, KSF Monitoring and Feedback, KSF Communication, and KSF Client Acceptance, and a criterion variable Project Performance, and an examination of how factor importance varied within the project life cycle. Pinto and Slevin's (1992) validated Project Implementation Profile (PIP) was used as the data collection instrument. Analysis of data from 100 responses solicited from employees of a company involved with mines maintenance projects in Arizona revealed a positive correlation between all four KSFs and Project Performance. The multiple regression analysis of Project Performance on KSF Personnel, KSF Client Acceptance, KSF Monitoring and Feedback and KSF Communication was significant (R = 0.780, R2 = 0.609, F (4, 95) = 37.003, p < .001). All four KSFs showed a positive correlation with project success with Client Acceptance making a significantly unique contribution in explaining the criterion variable (Beta =0.425, p < .0001); whereas, the unique contribution of KSF Personnel, KSF Monitoring and Feedback, and KSF Communication were not significant.
