Seventy IT Professionals responded to a survey investigating a potential correlation between software project management success and a manager's depth of technical IT knowledge. The results indicate a weak relation between project success rates and IT knowledge. In particular, IT skill levels and formal IT education showed only weak correlations with project success rate, while IT experience showed almost no relationship with project success rate.;These results were somewhat surprising, in that conventional wisdom has been that these factors would be more strongly correlated. Possible weaknesses in the research methodology include a lack of sufficient divergence in IT skill levels in survey respondents, reliance on self-reporting for the factors measured, and lack of a standard metric for assessing "project success."... |
