Abstract/Summary:
Transformational leaders are expected to facilitate organizational innovation and employee creativity to ensure organizational survival, continued growth, and success through role modeling and leading by example. Given this need, it is proposed that transformational leaders must be creative to role model or lead creativity by example for employees and the organization. The purpose of this research, then, was to explore transformational leader creativity. To accomplish this purpose, one main question, "How are transformational leaders creative?" and eight subsidiary questions were explored with 10 nominated transformational leaders. Using an exploratory, pragmatic, multicase research design, qualitative data from interviews and documents were analyzed with Atlas.ti and the results triangulated with data from two instruments: MBTIRTM Form F and the MLQ. Conclusions drawn from seven emergent themes were presented with key findings in the areas of problem solving, decision making, creating, words as creative expression, training, domain knowledge, external impediments to creativity, and internal barriers to creativity. General recommendations focused on facilitating transformational leader creativity through formal development, training, and informal learning for knowledge management, self-recognition of creativity, decision making, and problem solving. Further research was proposed in nine categories with a focus on expanded understanding of transformational leader creativity for theoretical and practical applications.
