Abstract/Summary:
The Magnetic Stereotaxis System is an experimental neurosurgical device which is capable of surgical treatment of regions of the brain which are otherwise inoperable. This treatment is carried out through guidance of a magnetic implant via an externally applied magnetic field. A catheter is towed with the implant can deliver chemotherapy to specific regions of the brain while bypassing the blood-brain barrier. The recent developments of this work have led to the considerations of future devices that would be capable of surgical treatment in other regions of the body. The following work addresses potential problems which a future device could face. Discussed are accurate magnetic field calculations, the guidance torque placed on the implant, and an artificial neural network system which may provide improvements over the current imaging system.
