Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between the total physical activity score, frequency, intensity, and duration of physical activity and proximity of exercise facilities and the quantity and satisfaction of home exercise equipment utilized by university students. The subjects in this study were 411 male and female undergraduate students enrolled at a Research Intensive university. Stratified sampling procedures were utilized. One hundred twenty-one freshmen, 99 sophomores, 97 juniors, and 94 seniors participated in this study.;Significant relationships between intensity and duration of physical activity and the proximity of exercise facilities utilized by university students were found. When the sample was examined by year in school, intensity and duration of physical activity was found significantly correlated with proximity of exercise facilities for freshmen. Intensity and duration of physical activity were found significantly related to the dependent variable for females when the relationships between the independent variables and proximity of exercise facilities were examined by gender. Frequency was the only independent variable found significantly correlated with the proximity of exercise facilities when males were examined separately. All of the independent variables significantly correlated with quantity of home exercise equipment. None of the independent variables significantly correlated with the satisfaction of home exercise equipment utilized by university students. When female students were examined independently, the relationships between the independent variables and quantity of home exercise equipment were found significant. No significant relationships were found between the independent variables and quantity of home exercise equipment for males. Freshmen and juniors were the only two class levels that had the majority of independent variables significantly correlated with quantity of home exercise equipment when the sample was examined by year in school.;Differences in the proximity of exercises facilities utilized by university students were found for year in school and gender. Females and males initiated physical activity approximately 3,290 and 4,189 feet, respectively from their residences. Differences were found in the quantity of home exercise equipment utilized by university students for year in school.;Multiple regression analyses revealed that frequency, duration, and intensity were credibly predicted with 78%, 43%, and 47% of the variance explained by the independent variables.
