Objectives:Much studies have confirmed that physical activity intervention in the elderly can help alleviate the medical burden of chronic non-communicable diseases, but few reports published in China. We conduct a cross-sectional study of the elderly in Jinhua city to enrich achievements among this field in China.Meanwhile, much cross-sectional studies lack effective control on confounders that lead to weak consistency of relevant evidence. This paper deals with the confounders to verify the correlation between physical activity and medical expenditure in the elderly with chronic non-communicable diseases(NCD).Also based on the results, relevant strategies are extracted to provide references for the policy-making departments. Methods:Based on cross-sectional design,1000 respondents(908 last valid samples)aged 60 and above with NCD were selected from 11 communities in Jinhua metropolitan. The demographics and sociological variables were investigated by questionnaire, and the medical expenditure data were collected by respondents' recall combined with Alipay online medical insurance query function.Physical activity scale for the elderly(PASE)was used to measure physical activity. The demographic characteristics, physical activity and medical expenditure were analyzed by descriptive statistics.General linear model was used to analyze whether the data of medical expenditure among different levels of physical activity presented a quantitative trend.Binary Logistic regression model was used to analyze the correlation between physical activity level and drug intake. Results:Neurasthenia, neurosis, high blood pressure, senile dementia symptoms, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, dyslipidemia, diabetes, osteoarthrosis and osteoporosis totaled 10 NCDs eventually as a source of medical expenditure data.Sample' daily exercise well inactivity frequency and single time duration, but dominated by low-intensity physical activity, while moderate to vigorous physical activity(MVPA)was lacking, and strength and flexibility exercises were ignored.General linear model revealed there is no good quantitative relationship between physical activity level and medical expenditure data. The results of Binary Logistic regression showed that the higher the frequency of sedentary physical activity, the higher the probability of drug intake for maintain health(? =0.281,OR=1.325,P<0.001),and the higher frequency of moderate intensity physical activity, the lower the probability of drug intake(?=-0.191,OR=0.826,P=0.003).Conclusions and Suggestions:(1)It is low feasible to establish a cross-sectional quantitative relationship between physical activity level and medical expenditure of NCD in the elderly. It is suggested to use qualitative indicators or focus on a single NCD in cross-sectional studies, while quantitative studies suggest longitudinal tracking or randomized controlled trial design.(2)Elderly with NCD who have better physical activity levels are less likely maintain health by drug intake.Promote the intervention of MVPA in the elderly and strengthen instructors of social sports on the physical exercise skills teaching, scientific fitness guidance and organizational management ability for the elderly(especially those with chronic non-communicable diseases).
