Abstract/Summary:
Josephine Hilgard was among the few women in the 1930s to earn both her Ph.D and MD. Her contributions to the field of psychology as a scientific researcher, psychiatrist, psychologist and psychoanalyst distinguish her among the great women of psychology. This study is a historical analysis of Hilgard's life and work in the area of child psychology, personality and hypnosis and hypnotic analgesia. It highlights the breadth of her work which has won her numerous awards and critical acclaim during her lifetime and has widen the scope of American psychology.
