| My approach to Multicultural Education focuses on Social Anthropology and Social Psychology, which proposes that integrating cultural diversity in all classrooms should be the norm, in lieu of offering a "special" class titled Multicultural Education. However, it should the a separate class at the college/university level, to teach teachers how to integrate diversity into all classrooms. I emphasize individuals' culture/heritage and their importance, which I feel significantly adds an innovative approach to the classroom. plus, it includes everyone. This curriculum, is directed at the secondary level. It gives examples of the various creative applications, (involving poetry/creative writing, role-playing, problem solving/decision making, interpersonal skills and etc.) that you, the teacher, can facilitate the learning of cultural diversity within their classroom. I stress the word facilitate, because I believe that's what good teaching is--facilitation.I also intend to show a common thread that all human beings have a sensitivity and drive to better themselves and their children, and to help create/enhance healthy self-concepts for the students and to show them that their concerns and values do have a positive impact on their schools. Most students think, and believe, that their communities are places where nothing works, and that there isn't a soul in town who seems to care about doing anything about it.The typical community's/school's philosophy is to basically help students prepare for the world of work--to learn some basic skills to be more successful in their adult life. Well, for many students, this will be the end of their education. If so, we have failed. For many, this is just the beginning of their education. We are forgetting to help prepare students for life now. Don't get me wrong, they need the reality of the work-world, but if a they can't cope with certain problems and do not have a positive self-image, then all of the "preparation" in the universe, will not ready them for their "work world."I have selected Native Americans, mainly from New Mexico, as a pivotal point--to show that through their sensitivity, we can create a better world. I feel that it is of utmost importance that Multicultural Education should share other heritage with the Native Americans. They have been abused by most every other culture/heritage, and even today, people are still taking from them. I also strongly believe, that it is time to start giving back--start sharing some of our personal heritage. Everyone is still seeking information from the Native Americans, but few ever share (give back) information about themselves. |
