The United States is an immigration country composed of people from different countries and social classes, with different nationalities, races and backgrounds. Meanwhile, the student structure in the school has been becoming more and more complex. However, the traditional education which assimilates the minority students to mainstream culture has created remarkable achievement gap between mainstream students and students who are marginalized within U.S. schools and society. In order to satisfy the need of future education and social development, the multicultural teacher education program has obtained unceasing development with the essential purpose of preparing teachers to be culturally responsive and capable of multicultural teaching, which has great influence on each social aspect. The American scholars have obtained amazing achievements in the field of fundamental theory researches and practice exploration regarding the multicultural education. Despite of differences between China and US in many aspects, US's experience and insufficiency may still supply references for us, as it is inevitable to face with challenges of how to respect, adapt and coordinate culture multiplicities along with social development.Seven parts are included in the dissertation.The first part analyses domestic and foreign research achievements in the field of American multicultural teacher education.The second part analyses backgrounds of American multicultural teacher education emergence as well as its developing process.The third part points out the theory basis of American multicultural teacher education which is multiculturalism.The fourth part illuminates goals and characteristics of American multicultural teacher education.The fifth part expounds the multicultural teacher education in America from the aspects of curriculum, teaching method and bilingual education ability.The sixth part expounds guarantee and support from two perspectives which are economy and institution.In the seventh part, author summarizes American multicultural education's achievements, experiences, defects and enlightenment in the process of its development, and proposes some suggestions to our country.
