Abstract/Summary:
The Indian seed industry is in the midst of profound changes because of rapid technological developments and extensive socioeconomic and legal reforms that have contributed to an uncertain business environment. There is a paucity of balanced analyses of the agribusiness industries in India, making it necessary to introduce innovative models of future thinking which are qualitative in nature.; This research explored an approach that uniquely integrated industrial organizations' structure-conduct-performance (SCP) framework with scenario method for the analysis of the Indian seed industry.; There is great potential for growth in the Indian seed sector under the present changing technological and global environment. The Indian seed industry is currently valued at Rs. 15 Billion (about {dollar}350 million), the vegetable seed sector accounting for about Rs. 3.5 Billion (about {dollar}80 million) and estimated to increase four-fold in the coming decade. The external factors related to the economy, government and environment such as economic growth, degree of liberalization, impact of world trade organization (WTO), drought and rainfall; along with increasing population and consumer income are the driving forces influencing the seed industry profile in India. Emphasis on the research and development (R&D) and marketing activities by actors within the seed industry is likely to affect the industry growth positively.; The Indian seed sector has a tremendous potential to become an outsourcing base with respect to production, technology and services for the global companies. This is due to the large infrastructural research network, diversity of agro-climatic conditions, and relatively less expensive labor and technical manpower in India. The complementary mode of public/private partnership in seed R&D and marketing linkages are likely to continue which will support the seed system development for bringing the Indian agriculture to its epitome in near future.
