Abstract/Summary:
There is currently a revival of interest in the Russian poet Georgij Ivanov. However, the critical literature about him is limited to the later period of his creative work. This dissertation is the first systematic research of the Petersburg-Berlin period (1909 to 1923).; The collection The Departure shows close ties with the contemporary literary processes. The actors' cycle in The Chamber emerges from the theatrical perception of reality. The leit-motif of The Chamber is the comfort of a closed and familiar world. The epilogue of this book reads like a manifesto of Acmeism. One of the poetic cycles serves as the source of the later collection, Heather.; In the best book of the Petersburg period, The Gardens, Ivanov continues the tradition of Russian romanticism with its love for the Orient, but expresses it by means of Acmeist poetics. At the same time, he bids farewell to romanticism.; The Icon-lamp is a concluding book which presents all the verses written within a ten-year period. It proves the stability of artistic imagery in Ivanov's poetry. This dissertation scrutinizes the folklore orientation inherent in a significant number of poems. The influence of painting on Ivanov's works is also shown.; For the first time Ivanov's critical works are discussed at some length. The important part of his outlook was that aesthetic contemplation preceded poetry and gave birth to it. As a literary critic, he followed established acmeist values.; In analyzing the Petersburg period as a self-contained artistic creation, we have also shown the link between this period and his subsequent poetry.
