Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation explores the formative movement from unintentional wrongdoing to an awareness of and asking forgiveness for the wrong. Following the research method of the discipline of formative spirituality, the topic is investigated initially from the perspective of one who unwittingly objectified another person, came to know (with humiliation and shame) of the suffering caused, and felt deep remorse or compunction for the wrong. The formative movement was investigated from the perspective of foundational human, foundational religious (using Sufism), and foundational Christian presence; and a selected segment (Catholic priests).;The research unfolded the dissonant interformative presence which original and personal sin can produce. As subjects encounter resistances, they may become deformatively firm and willfully harsh. Their self-centeredness produces an innermost restlessness and allows the soul to direct the heart as subjects intuit their sinful selves. The exemplar of others may remind subjects of their sinful lives, leading to consciousness of, and shame for, dissonant interformative presence and uncharitable ministry. With prayerful reappraisal, subjects conclude they need to follow the directives of their faith and form traditions with a unity of love of God and love of neighbor. Having distorted or denied the uniqueness of others, and lacked charity in their ministry, subjects feel spiritual guilt. With deepest sorrow commingled with deepest joy, subjects ask the forgiveness which immerses them in God's love.;Obstacles are a functionalism fostered by sociohistorical pulsations, attachment to the worldly, anger, envy, and busyness. Demonic seduction, loneliness, perfectionism, and scrupulosity hinder movements to consonance. As consciousness of the wrongdoing becomes increasingly focal, the deadly sins of pride, sloth, and vainglory are troublesome.;Suggested as facilitating formative movement are the dispositions of simplicity, gentleness, and reverence; and attempts to live the formative directives of one's faith and form tradition, as by fasting, almsgiving, spiritual reading, and examination of conscience. Prayer is essential throughout.;The research confirms the difficulty original sin causes for consonant formation while pointing out the exposure of faults and failures as servant sources of formation. Compunction proves to be a foundational disposition.
