Abstract/Summary:
Combining alternative (i.e. cultural, cross-cultural) and traditional psychologies may offer a fuller understanding of human psychology (Stevens & Gielen, 2007). Garifunas are an ethnic group who reside in Honduras, Belize, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the United States. According to history, the ancestors of Garifunas are thought to have originated from tribes in West Africa. Literature indicates that Garifunas suffer from several psychological and social stressors associated with late onset of disability due to their limited understanding of such conditions. As a result of illnesses and disabilities, some Garifunas are isolated from their family, friends, and community. This study used a mixed methods concurrent triangulation design to investigate the relationship between age and perception of disability, and education and perception of disability among Garifunas in Honduras. In addition, this study aimed to explore how mental health is perceived among Garifunas in Honduras. The quantitative method used the Questions about Disability Survey (QADS) to gather the perception of 148 participants toward disabilities. The qualitative method used a phenomenological approach to explore the perception of 10 participants toward mental health. The results of this study will assist identifying other psychological paradigms to promote the well-being of Garifunas in Honduras. Understanding factors associated with how Garifunas view disabilities and mental health would allow the Garifuna community to develop a plan to support educate and empower each other on disability and mental health related issues. Furthermore, the implications of this study are significant in developing partnerships with the Honduran government to promote the well-being of the Garifuna community.
