A Study On Parental Consciousness Of Parents With Mental Disabilities

People with mental retardation as vulnerable groups of society has been concerned by community. For a long time, mental retardation rehabilitation or educational institutions are mostly concerned about the mental disorders, and ignored the concerns of their parents’ awareness. However, parents are the most important relationships of mental disorders, they plays a vital role in physical and mental development and rehabilitation process of mental disorders, the level of parental awareness has important implications in the rehabilitation process, effects, and even the state of their lives. In this study, I discuss the parental awareness from the perspective of sociology, social psychology and social work. In this paper, I invited parents to do intellectual disabilities questionnaire in Nanjing Qinhuai District and selected eight parents do the interviews, to learn about the perception, emotions, attitudes, faces difficulties as well as their expectations for the policy of parents of the people with mental retardation, which proposes to promote positive awareness of parents.In this study, the correlation analysis showed that parents’ awareness to the mental disorders, self-awareness and awareness of the social environment was a significant positive correlation. Parents awareness of the people with Intellectual disabilities on their awareness to the children, self-awareness and social awareness were significantly different from normal parents, and the scores were lower than normal parents. ANOVA test showed:parents education, income, occupation, and the child’s level of education affects parents awareness of mental disorder; the parents’ income, health status, children’s degree of mental retardation can affect parents’ self awareness; parents’ age will affect their awareness of the social environment. Parental awareness of intellectual disabilities receiving rehabilitation training, education, and parents have a significant impact on the confidence in the future of the children, and have less effect on the treatment situation of children.Combined with interviews of the respondents, I proposes to promote parental awareness of approach to government policies to protect the people with mental retardation and improve the subsidy of mental disorders, disabilities who run sheltered factories, and ensure the mental disorders have health insurance. Society give support to the establishment of specialized social welfare institutions, the media guide public opinion correctly, and improve citizen acceptance of disabilities. Parents themselves to be optimistic, full of emotional support to children, self-encouragement and self-development to create a good environment for people with intellectual disabilities.
