China is currently the world's largest energy consumer and carbon dioxide emitter, which has an obligation to undertake the responsibility of energy conservation and emission reduction.China's economic growth is very rapid. It is not feasible to reduce carbon emissions by slowing down the economy. Therefore, improving efficiency has become an important measure to reduce carbon dioxide in various industries.Intensity is commonly used to measure the performance of energy and environmental efficiency. The Chinese government has promised to reduce aggregate carbon intensity by 40%-45% from 2005 levels by 2020.By2030,aggregate carbon intensity will be reduced by 60%-65% compared with the level in2005.There are many provinces and municipalities in China, and their industries are very different.Based on the analysis of the current situation and historical trend of China's energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, this paper studies the driving factors of China's carbon intensity and energy intensity from various perspectives. The major research work in this paper is as follows:Firstly, the driving factors of carbon intensity in the industrial sector are studied, because industrial sector emits the most carbon dioxide from end use energy consumption in China. From a multi-sectoral perspective, this paper combines the index decomposition method with the multi-sector attribution analysis method to construct a multi-sector decomposition framework and applies this framework to study the changes in carbon intensity in China's industrial sector.Besides, the contributions of 12 industrial sub-sectors to each driving factor is further studied by using multi-sector attribution analysis method.Secondly, this paper studies the driving factors of carbon intensity in the electricity sector, which emits the most carbon dioxide from primary energy consumption in China. From a multi-region perspective,a multi-region decomposition framework is constructed.Firstly, temporal index decomposition analysis method is used to decompose the carbon intensity of China's electricity sector from 2000 to 2015 into four factors, including thermal efficiency effect, clean power penetration effect, fossil fuel mix effect, and regional shift effect. Then, the contributions of 30 provinces to the driving factors are studied by using regional attribution analysis method. Finally,a multi-region spatial-IDA was further adopted to assess the emission performance of electricity generation in 30 provinces in 2000 and 2015.Based on the results, the regional policies and measures for carbon dioxide emission reduction in China's electricity sector are analyzed and discussed.Thirdly,a multi-region multi-sector decomposition framework is constructed, and the driving factors of aggregate carbon intensity in China from 2000 to 2015 are analyzed.Firstly, aggregate carbon intensity in China is decomposed into four driving factors: emission coefficient effect, energy intensity effect, sectoral structure effect and regional structural effect. Then, the contributions of 30 provinces and 16 industries to each driving factor are studied by multi-region multi-sector attribution analysis method. This research method, which integrates the two dimensions into a framework, can help us to understand the historical changes of carbon intensity more thoroughly from multiple perspectives, such as the impact of changes in industrial structure in the region and the transfer of production across regions. Finally, the effectiveness of carbon intensity reduction policies at the sectoral and regional levels is studied based on the results. Finally, because the energy intensity effect is the most important driving factor to inhibit aggregate carbon intensity, this paper combines the index decomposition method(IDA)with the production-theoretical decomposition analysis method(PDA)to construct a multi-region multi-sector PDA-IDA factor decomposition research framework.Using this framework, the driving factors of aggregate energy intensity in China is studies.Combining with production theory method,we can further explore the technology related factors.Firstly, aggregate energy intensity in China from 2000 to 2015 is decomposed into five driving factors: potential energy intensity effect, sectoral structure effect, regional structural effect, energy usage efficiency effect and energy saving technology gap effect. In order to explore the contributions of various sectors and regions to each driving factor, the multi-region multi-sector attribution analysis method is further applied. In this paper,PDA,IDA and attribution analysis method are integrated into a framework to study the driving factors of aggregate energy intensity in China.
