Laoqida(???)and Piaotongshi (???)have been revered in Korea as Chinese conversation textbooks for about five hundred years from the Goryeo to the Chosun Dynasties. The two books were constantly revised according to the changes in the current language, revealing in them the historical evolution of modern Chinese. The Korean linguist Choi Sejin(???),who lived in the Chosun Dynasty, specifically compiled a dictionary for the two books, Laopiaojilan(????),which has four parts:Danzijie (???),Leizijie (???),Laoqidajilan (?????), and Piaotongshijilan (?????)Among them, Danzijie and Leizijie are the parts that cover the common words in the two books. This thesis is the first overall study on all the words in Danzijie and Leizijie. It covers all the usages of each word in Laopiaojilan in the four versions of Laoqida and the two versions of Piaotongshi. Further, it researched the evolutions of Chinese in the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. Furthermore, it summed up the characteristics of the evolutions of modern Chinese on several aspects. The article is divided into six chapters:Chapter I is the introduction, which describes the object, purpose, and research method of this paper. It also introduces the previous research on this topic.Chapter II is the summary of Laopiaojilan, describing its compilation and structure, and introduces the versions of Laoqida and Piaotongshi.Chapter III discusses the historical evolution of the words in Danzijie and Leizijie. First, it discusses the research conducted on the construction and sequence of words in Danzijie and Leizijie. Then, it discusses each word in all the versions of Laoqida and Piaotongshi, considering all the usages individually and then describes the process of the evolution of each word.Chapter IV is based on chapter III and concludes the evolution processes of the common words in Laoqida and Piaotongshi, including the replacement of words, changes in word classes, and linguistic changes consequent to the emergence of the Mongolian language.Chapter V discusses the standards for the choice of words and meanings in Laopiaojilan and Choi Sejin's practical teaching spirit. Simultaneously, it states that although some words were included in Laopioajilan, those words and their meanings have not been included in the published dictionary, which proves the importance of Laopiaojilan in the study of modern Chinese vocabulary.Chapter VI is the conclusion. It sums up the evolution of common vocabulary in Laoqida and Piaotongshi and the importance of Laopiaojilan.
