The Study On Xiangxi Image In Film And Television Drama

This thesis mainly studies the figure of Xiang Xi in the movies and TV series.Xiang Xi is taken as a research object because it is the space for culture imagination as well as symbolization for holistic culture.The figure of Xiang Xi in the movies and TV series has been endowed multiple meaning and connotation.These multi-meaning figures are not isolated phenomenon,but belong to certain space and period with unified structure and ideology framework.The thesis is constructed with four chapters.Chapter one mainly studies the figure of local Xiang Xi in the TV series.The source of local Xiang Xi figure is from the figure presented by the movies adapted from Shen Congwen's novels.These movies directed by famous directors are based on novels and reflect the perception and imagination of the author to the changes of politics and artistic ideology trends.The moive‘Border Town'imagined the poetic Xiang Xi and expressed poetic insight of natural village 'Cha Dong'using elegant and beautiful images.These are the cultural reflection of ten-year Cultural Revolution by the author in early 1980s.The movie 'A Girl from Hunan' imagined a super-stabilized world of Xiang Xi and revealed the life tragedy of the individual who initially pursued humanity unconsciously but finally insensitively and consciously approve the traditional ethical code.This is the cultural reflection of author in 1980s and national character criticism influenced by seeking-roots ideological trend.The movie 'Husband'imagined the Xiang Xi suffered from modern society siege.It reflected the dissimilation status of people in modern commercial economy system through revealing the fate and survival of Xiang Xi individual in city.This is the living reflection of author to the full-blown market economy in early 1990s.Chapter two mainly studies the figure of cultural Xiang Xi.In the age of globalization,Xiang Xi is capable of proceeding global dialogue depending on the historic local culture with abundant sources.Xiang Xi culture is a local culture that treasure and respect individual life seriously,high recognize the ethnic group,extremely loyal to the country in the TV series presenting Xiang Xi culture in this period.Other than traditional central plain culture,the formation of Xiang Xi culture is influenced by multiple factors.However,it kept a relatively independent and stable culture as it is away from the traditional feudal dynasty.Chapter three mainly studies the figure of Xiang Xi bandits in the TV series.As the performance object in the TV series,Xiang Xi bandits have a long history.The people living in the land of Xiang Xi is called 'savage','Wuling savage' or 'Xiang Xi savage' by the feudal dynasties.Records on Xiang Xi bandits can be found in the references of Qing dynasty.The activity of Xiang Xi bandits was rampant in the Republican China period,leading to large-scale clearing battles by the government after liberation.In the Anti-bandits TV series with new era national ideology occupying dominant position,Xiang Xi bandits are the national clearing targets either by their 'savage' characteristic of backward,tyranny and some genus defects or the 'savage' characteristic of barbarism and conservative.In the age of globalization,the rise of mass culture occupied by commercialization and interestingness leads to the fading of historic consciousness.To satisfy to market requirements,the Xiang Xi bandits in TV series are not favored by the'savage' characteristic but as a character of new middle class or the secondary participants in the intellectual games between elite force of Nationalist Party and the Communist Party in Xiang Xi region.Chapter four mainly studies reasons for formation of Xiang Xi image and the nature of Xiang Xi image in video works.Nationalistic stance in historical text extorts Xiang Xi and ecstasy about Xiang Xi expressed in literature.And they are misunderstood through the history.Influence of mainstream during different periods upon cultural activities and thought of writers also have great impact on the formation of Xiang Xi.The first is the imagism,including modern imagination of nation and enlightment culture imagination of intellectuals.The second is the changeability.The third is bipolarism.The image of acknowledgement is with obvious ideology and the image of difference is with utopianism.A summary of Xiang Xi image in video works is presented at the end of this essay.The conclusion part mainly points out that the figure of Xiang Xi in the movies and TV series has various forms.But its formation and changes are always influenced by social economy,politics and cultures.
