The rapid technology iteration, the increasingly obvious distributed knowledge,as well as the trend of industry and technology convergence drive firms to collaborate with external organizations to realize innovation.Especially for high-tech firms, the higher technical complexity and systematicness make it impossible for a single organization to realize the whole product design and production process,so it is necessary to utilize and leverage different types of knowledge assets from complementary resources through collaborative innovation. However, innovation collaboration has costs and risks. The benefits, costs and risks borne by high-tech firms in extensive and deep innovation collaboration will change with the degree of collaboration. Therefore, the degree of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms becomes a key factor affecting their innovation performance. Moreover, innovation collaboration of high-tech firms shows obvious characteristics of knowledge. The essence of collaboration is the flow and integration of knowledge. Both inbound and outbound flows of knowledge are involved in broad and deep collaboration. Therefore,it is worth exploring how the breadth and depth of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms affect their innovation performance in the case of bidirectional flow of knowledge. In addition, the innovation collaboration of high-tech firms inevitably has an involuntary spillover of knowledge, which may lead to problems such as knowledge theft and intellectual property conflicts between partners, and harm the innovation benefits of firms. In this way,how to effectively manage the knowledge flow across the organization to achieve the knowledge governance of high-tech firm innovation collaboration,so as to promote the improvement of firms' innovation performance is crucial.Focusing on the theme of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms, based on the theories of open innovation, collaborative innovation, appropriability and profiting form innovation, modularity and knowledge governance, this paper studies the influence of the innovation collaboration degree of high-tech firms on their innovation performance from the perspective of knowledge governance. On the basis of in-depth literature research, this paper sorts out research ideas and carries out a series of progressive studies, including the following four aspects:(1)Identifing the characteristics of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms, and analyzing the basic logic of knowledge governance of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms. From the perspective of knowledge governance, this paper proposes to analyze the impact of the breadth and depth of innovation collaboration on innovation performance of high-tech firms based on the bidirectional flow of knowledge. On this basis, appropriability mechanisms and technological modularity are introduced from the aspects of institutional arrangement and architecture design to realize the knowledge governance of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms.(2)Research on the influence of innovation collaboration degree of high-tech firms on innovation performance under knowledge folw.Based on the bidirectional flow characteristics of knowledge, this paper analyzes the influence of breadth and depth of innovation collaboration on innovation performance, and puts forward relevant research hypotheses.(3)The moderating role of appropriability mechanisms and technological modularity on the relationship between degree of innovation collaboration of high-tech firms and innovation performance.Firstly,on the basis of distinguishing the difference between formal and informal appropriability mechanisms, this paper analyzes how the two mechanisms respectively moderates the impact of the collaboration breadth and depth on innovation performance, and reveals the institutional knowledge governance mechanism.Secondly, the moderating effect of technological modularity on innovation performance of high-tech firms is analyzed, and the embedded knowledge governance mechanism is revealed. Finally, relevant research hypotheses are proposed.(4)Empirical research. The primary data obtained from the questionnaire survey and the secondary data published on the Internet were used to test the research hypothesis.According to the types of variables, analytic hierarchy process was used to test the main effect and the moderating effect of technological modularity.Partial least squares based structural equation model(PLSSEM)was used to test the moderating effect of appropriability mechanisms. The following three main conclusions were drawn:(1)Considering the bidirectional flow of knowledge, the breadth of innovation collaboration has an inverted U shaped relationship with firms' innovation performance, and the depth of innovation collaboration positively affects the innovation performance of firms.(2)Formal and informal appropriability mechanisms have different roles.Formal appropriability mechanism weakened the impact of innovation collaboration breadth on innovation performance, while informal appropriability mechanism highly weakened the impact of innovation collaboration depth on innovation performance. Moreover, the use of formal mechanism in the extensive collabortion and the use of informal mechanism in the in-depth collaboration will bring higher innovation performance.(3)Technological modularity weakens the influence of innovation collaboration depth on innovation performance. This study has four main contribution and innovation points:(1)The analysis framework of the influence of innovation collaboration degree on firm innovation performance is constructed from the perspective of bidirectional flow of knowledge, which makes up for the ignorance of the previous research on the knowledge outward flow.(2)Focusing on the characteristics of high-tech firms' innovation collaboration, this paper proposes institutional and embedded knowledge governance, and explores the specific roles of appropriability mechanisms and technological modularity in innovation collaboration of high-tech firms. It promotes the boundary convergence of knowledge governance research and enriches the existing knowledge governance mechanism system.(3)This paper explores the complex relationship between the degree of collaboration, appropriability mechanisms and performance, and validates the synergies of two poles of paradox.(4)In terms of research methods and measurement of variables, the formal and informal appropriability mechanisms were measured by using the hierarchical latent variable measurement method, and partial least square structural equations modeling(PLS-SEM)was used for model fitting, reflecting the influence of the internal structure of variables on the whole. Therefore, more scientific quantitative methods have been developed to make the related subjects and conclusions more reasonable and effective. Finally, the conclusion of this study provides specific guidance of innovation collaboration strategies for high-tech firms in practice, helps high-tech firms to actively break through innovation collaboration dilemma, promotes the high-quality development of high-tech firms, and promotes the successful implementation of China's innovation-driven strategy.
