Abstract/Summary:
At present,China’s economy is transforming from high-speed growth to high-quality growth.Innovation is becoming an important driving force for economic development by gradually replacing factors and investments.Under the new situation of increasingly fierce competition in information technology and globalization, and the accelerated growth of global strategic emerging industries, promoting innovation driven development has become the key to China’s economic transformation, upgrading industrial value and gaining international competitive advantage. The report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that innovation is the first driving force of economic development and the strategic support of building a modern economic system. In the 2018 government work report,it was proposed to speed up the construction of an innovative country, deeply implement the innovation driven development strategy, and continuously enhance the economic innovation and competitiveness. It can be seen that innovation driven has become the key to realize a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation in China, and it is also the fundamental driving force for China to move towards the stage of high-quality development. As the gathering place of innovation elements and the important node of innovation network, big cities not only have strong attraction for innovative enterprises and innovative elements, but also, with the accumulation and diffusion of human capital and knowledge under the effect of agglomeration effect, urban innovation capability has been strengthened, and it plays an accelerator role in economic development.Especially in the era of knowledge economy, high skilled human capital has become the core element to stimulate urban economic vitality and enhance urban innovation ability. In recent years, many capital cities in China, including the big cities with a population of nearly 10 million, have staged a "battle for talents".Attracting high skilled labor for employment and settlement has become an important "competition project" in urban competition. The competition for "talents" among cities shows that high skilled human capital plays an important role in promoting innovation capability and economic growth. Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to cultivate regional innovation subject,to improve regional innovation cooperation network,to continuously play the contribution of innovation elements to urban and regional economic growth, and to achieve high-quality development by discussing the influence and mechanism of city size on innovation capability and its spatial spillover effect.Based on the new economic growth theory, innovation system theory, agglomeration economy theory and spatial knowledge economy theory, this dissertation constructs an analysis framework of the impact and mechanism of city size on innovation capability, analyzes the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics and evolution rules between city size and innovation capability, and makes a deep analysis from the perspective of overall characteristics, regional differentiation and city size differentiation analysis and summary.Using two-stage SBM-NDEA and super efficiency SBM-DEA to evaluate the innovation efficiency of regions and cities in stages and systematically, which expand the measurement methods and evaluation methods of urban innovation capacity.Analyzing the main factors influencing innovation capability and emphatically discussing the influence of city size on innovation capability by constructing static panel model and dynamic panel model. From the perspective of human capital skill premium, this dissertation examines the mechanism of city size on heterogeneous labor income and human capital skill premium, and empirically tests the selection effect and classification effect of city size on skilled heterogeneous labor.Taking the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as an example, this dissertation studies the spatial characteristics and mechanism of innovation capability and the spatial spillover effect of key factors on innovation output of Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration from three aspects of spatial correlation, spatial spillover effect and spatial convergence by using exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA),statistical analysis,non-spatial model and spatial econometric model. In order to provide theoretical and practical basis for improving urban innovation capability and promoting the formation of regional innovation system, this dissertation puts forward policy suggestions on talent policy formulation, employment choice of labor with heterogeneous skills and regional innovation network construction.Based on the above research, the innovation points of this dissertation are mainly reflected in the following three aspects:(1)On the basis of traditional labor location selection model, this dissertation introduces the idea of spatial knowledge economy theory, and constructs the theoretical analysis framework of interaction mechanism between city size and innovation capability from the perspective of human capital skill premium.Based on the theory of agglomeration economy, new economic geography,"new" new economic geography and spatial knowledge economy, this dissertation takes the ideas exchange as the main force of urban agglomeration, and focuses on the influence of the interaction between heterogeneous innovation elements(human capital)and city size on innovation capability.Through the income adjustment mechanism, this dissertation empirically tests the selection effect and classification effect of city size on skill heterogeneity human capital, and its influence on labor income and skill premium under the agglomeration effect of city size and compensation effect of wages in big cities. Thus it makes the micro mechanism research of the influence of city size on innovation capability become deep and enrichment.(2)This dissertation introduces SBM-NDEA and super efficiency SBM-DEA methods into the evaluation of innovation efficiency, which not only overcomes the defect that traditional DEA method can not estimate the multi-stage innovation efficiency at the same time, but also increases the comparability of innovation capability among several high-efficiency cities.Considering the multi-stage and networked characteristics of innovation activities, this dissertation constructs an evaluation index system of innovation efficiency from the two stages of technology research&development and economic transformation. The innovation efficiency of 30 provinces(autonomous regions and municipalities)and 296 cities at prefecture level and above in China is measured by using Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA)Methods such as SBM-NDEA and super efficiency SBM-DEA.On the one hand, this method overcomes the defect that the traditional DEA method can not estimate the performance of multiple production activities of DMUs at the same time.On the other hand,it also considers the situation that the efficiency of multiple decision-making units is 1 at the same time, thus broadening the application of DEA method in the evaluation of innovation efficiency, and optimizing the estimation method of innovation efficiency.(3)This dissertation systematically improves the research on the relationship between city size and innovation capability, discusses the non-linear effect, threshold effect and spatial effect of city size on innovation capability, and quantifies the multiple threshold values of city size, which provides theoretical reference for the implementation of China’s new urbanization and innovation driven economic development policies. Most of the research on innovation capability is carried out from the national, regional or enterprise level, and the research on urban innovation capability is relatively few,and most of the researches only take the city size as a regulatory variable or control variable into the model, and lack of systematic research on the interaction between city size and innovation capability and its mechanism. This dissertation systematically discusses the relationship between city size and innovation capability and its mechanism from the city level, and verifies the non-linear relationship between city size and innovation capability, the moderating effect of city size on innovation input factors, and the threshold effect of city size on R&D personnel and capital investment on innovation capability.Taking the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as an example, this dissertation further studies the spatial correlation, spatial convergence and spatial spillover effect of urban innovation capability and its core influencing factors, which makes up for the deficiency of existing literature on city size and innovation capability, and improves the relevant research system and research conclusions.Knowledge production and human capital accumulation constitute the most lasting power source of economic growth in an economy. The real internal driving force of national economic development lies in innovation.Based on the theoretical framework of spatial knowledge economy, this dissertation makes a theoretical and Empirical Study on the relationship between city size and innovation capability and its influencing mechanism.Which can provide a useful reference for promoting the improvement of urban innovation capacity, formatting the regional innovation system and the high-quality development of cities, and also provide a practical basis for optimizing the city size system distribution and formulating urban and regional development policies, industrial policies and population policies.
