As an important part of the Grand Canal which has made successful application for or World Cultural Heritage,the Canal ancient town carries the life,production and cultural memory of the residents by the Canal.The rapid urban integration process and the decrease of the shipping have fundamentally changed traditional way of production and life style of the ancient town,which,thereupon,has been declining.How to conduct innovative research on the protection and renewal mode of the Canal ancient town nowadays has become an important topic to realize its inheritance and sustainable development.This research takes Zhedong Canal ancient town as research object.It studies and works out the spatial topology quantification of three Zhedong Canal ancient town through analyzing the history,development path and growth mechanism of the Canal ancient town,and exploring the dialectical relationship between subject and object at multi-scale spatial levels as well as organizations and constructions of different spatial levels under "spatial adaptation",with the help of research methods of typology,space syntax,environmental behavior,and ethnography;concerns about the spirit of place and space value;emphasizes the shifts from overall pattern to personal space experience and then to the interaction between them,and from a static model to a dynamic system,and from single dimension to a multi-dimensional analysis,in order to realize the change of the Canal ancient town from space revival to cultural revival and sustainable development.Chapter 1 is introduction and summarizing the research status of the protection and renewal of historical towns.Canal ancient towns and historical buildings at home and abroad,it is proposed that the historical continuity and contemporary sustainable development of canal ancient towns are an important way to realize the spatial rejuvenation of ancient towns in the post World Heritage application era and under the background of new urbanization.It also reveals the internal regularity of the impact of different types and levels of spatial adaptability on the rise and fall of Zhedong Canal ancient town.Chapter 2 is the definition of research objects and the establishment of research methods for the space of Zhedong Canal ancient towns.It explores the evolution of the spatial models of the Canal and the ancient towns,the evaluation of the spatial adaptability of the towns and ideas of updating strategies,through which to determine the research samples on spatial adaptability.Chapter 3 studies the causes of the formation of the spatial structures of ancient towns from analyzing their topological types,features of street structures adaptability and the origin and development of the architectures of Zhedong Canal ancient towns.Chapter 4 focuses on the spatial topological configuration characteristics of ancient town settlements and their streets and lanes,and observes the daily behavior patterns of the residents and the coupling between space and behavior patterns,to analyze and summarize the spatial characteristics of Zhedong Canal ancient towns and the dynamic adaptability of behavior patterns of different spaces and people;Chapter 5 summarizes the types of residential buildings and the three adaptable representations of residential buildings,and proposes that in new era,the visual characteristics of the residential buildings will change when it undergoes adaptive functional changes.Based on the above analysis and research,chapter 6 discusses and reveals the rule the spatial adaptability of different scales and multi-dimensions of Zhedong Canal ancient towns,and proposes the renewal strategy and model on the basis of "space adaptability".
