In the context of intensifying international competition in science and technology, research universities are the source of knowledge and bear important responsibilities for knowledge innovation, talent training and regional development in the innovation-driven strategy, and the contradiction between the traditional functional space of campuses and the innovative needs of research and teaching is becoming increasingly obvious. At the same time, most of the existing campuses of research universities in China have a long history, but in the process of development there is a lack of overall guidance and control, and the disorderly construction of the campuses has caused various problems in the existing campuses at present. Also, the existing campuses of research universities in China have stabilised, and the urban development stage has also reached a change from "quantity" to "quality".Therefore, the future development and renewal of the existing campuses of research universities in the context of innovation drive has become a pressing concern. This paper takes the above-mentioned realistic needs as the starting point, introduces the background of the innovation-driven era, takes the technological innovation of research universities as the starting point, and combines the relevant theories of the innovation-driven strategy with the theories of planning and architecture to conduct an interdisciplinary study. The thesis analyses the existing campuses of research universities at three levels: planning, architecture and public space.Through data statistics, case studies and theoretical summaries, the thesis attempts to construct a set of systematic design thinking for the renewal of existing campuses of research universities under the drive for innovation, providing certain theoretical guidance and strategic ideas for the renewal of existing campuses in China in the future. The content of the thesis is divided into three main parts:I.Presenting the problem and theoretical construction(Chapters 1,2 and 3)Firstly,in the context of the innovation-driven era,the various problems and contradictions in the construction of existing campuses of research universities in China are sorted out in view of the trend that the renewal of existing campuses of research universities in China needs to be gradually inclined towards "innovation and research".Secondly, through the analysis of the development history of research universities at home and abroad, the main factors driving the development of campuses and the direction of development in the context of an innovative society are summarised. Finally, the theoretical foundation is established by introducing theories from various disciplines and theories related to planning and architectural design from the innovation-driven theory;a framework system of campus renewal objectives and strategies is constructed at three levels: planning level, architectural level and public space level.II.Analysis of Problems and Empirical Research(Chapters 4,5 and 6)Combining relevant theories with the outstanding problems of campus construction, specific design studies to promote the renewal of innovation, scientific research, talent cultivation and campus attractiveness of research-based established campus universities are explored at three different levels:firstly,at the planning level, the links between city-campus,clusters and spaces are strengthened to enhance the openness and publicness of the campus;then at the architectural level, the current situation of campus buildings is sorted out and different Finally,at the level of public space, the core spaces of the campus will be continued and strengthened, and the fragmented negative spaces will be unblocked and linked to form an innovative network, establishing a multi-level interaction space structure,an open and integrated public space of the campus, improving the quality of the public space of the campus, and creating a humane and environmentally friendly dynamic campus. This will create a humane, environmentally friendly and dynamic campus.III.Theoretical summary and practical exploration(Chapter 7)The design strategies established at different levels are synthesized to form the overall principles and integration strategies;then the author further explores the application of this strategy system in practice and the future development trend by combining several cases of existing campus renewal design projects of research universities that the author has been responsible for in recent years. This study points out that the renewal of existing campuses of research universities driven by innovation is a change in thinking from passive renewal and disorderly construction to organic renewal under the guidance of active thinking, from the gradual opening of campuses from closed systems to integrated cities, and from the development of campuses and cities separately to regional synergy.Under a holistic approach, the regeneration of existing university campuses should actively strengthen the integration and opening of the city and the university, creating learning and innovation zones in the city;integrating formal and informal spaces at all levels, strengthening clusters and promoting cross-disciplinary and resource sharing;establishing diversified and diverse places for interaction, increasing the attractiveness and humanity of the campus;and creating a high-quality campus with great innovative vitality and resilience. The study combines the outstanding problems of the renewal of existing campuses in China with advanced foreign experiences and trends, and the proposed design study not only provides a reference basis for solving the outstanding problems of the current situation, but also hopes to provide some valuable theoretical and practical guidance for the future renewal and construction of new university campuses in China at this stage.
