A Study On The English Translation Project Of Chinese Minority Literature(1949-2019)

In the early days of the founding of the People’s Republic of China,the government hoped to use literature as the carrier of foreign publicity and communication,with the intention of breaking the blockade of western countries at that time through literary translation,introducing China to the world and building a new national image.Under the organizational planning of Chinese official institutions,a large number of Chinese literature works,including minority literature,have been translated into English.Chinese minority literature has been widely translated and disseminated in the Englishspeaking world,and has become one of the important ways for overseas readers to understand China.This dissertation focuses on the translation of Chinese minority literature works initiated by Chinese official institutions or translated by Chinese translators from 1949 to 2019,on the basis of historical materials,analyzes the influence factors and production modes of English translation of Chinese minority literature in different periods.At the same time,this dissertation reveals the positive role of Chinese minority literature works in publicizing Chinese literature and building the national image of China,and summarizes experience for Chinese minority literature and Chinese literature to further "going out" in the future.This dissertation consists of eight chapters.The introduction focuses on sorting out and reviewing domestic and foreign literature on the translation of Chinese minority literature,and introduces the relevant research background,the reason for the topic selection,the scope of research objects,research value,research methods and ideas.Chapter two analyzes the influence factors in the English translation of Chinese minority literature.From the perspective of external factors,the English translation of Chinese minority literature is "controlled" by "power field",especially by political factors,economic factors and cultural factors.From the perspective of internal factors,translators,authors,readers and commentators as participants in the English translation activities of Chinese minority literature,interact with each other.In addition,as the main object of English translation activities,the quality and attractiveness of works is an important guarantee for good effects of dissemination and acceptance.Chapter three,chapter four and Chapter five study the English translation activities of Chinese minority literature from three different periods,and analyze the production mode,text selection norms and dissemination and acceptance of Chinese minority literature in different periods on the basis of describing the historical situation of translation.Chapter six studies the influence of translators on the English translation of Chinese minority literature.Translators’ subjective role in translation activities exists objectively,and their cultural identity,gender consciousness and personal poetics will affect the choice of translation strategies and methods.At the same time,translators exert their subjectivity in the compilation and rewriting of English anthologies of Chinese minority literature.Chapter seven investigates the translation model of Chinese minority literature from the perspective of translation activities.At present,there are three main production modes in China,the first is initiated by Chinese national institutions and published by Chinese publishing houses,the second is initiated by Chinese national institutions and published by foreign publishing houses,and the third is initiated by Chinese scholars and published by foreign publishing houses.By analyzing and comparing the advantages and disadvantages of domestic and foreign translation models,the author proposes to cooperate with overseas mainstream publishing and communication channels.To promote the cooperation between excellent local translators and foreign translators represented by sinologist and overseas Chinese translators,and establish a mode of joint translation between Chinese and foreign translators and authors.Chapter eight summarizes the achievements and problems in the English translation of Chinese minority literature in the past 70 years since the founding of China.From 1949 to 2019,the English translation activities of Chinese minority literature actively serve the national cultural strategy,enrich the translation and introduction of Chinese literature,and promote the classicization of Chinese minority literature works.Of course,there are several problems.First,the ethnic distribution of translated works is not comprehensive,the genre type is not balanced,the speed of translation is not timely.Second,the phenomenon of repeated production is serious.Third,there are some errors in translation accuracy.Fourth,the influence of translation is not enough.The conclusion discusses how to further "going out" of Chinese minority literature and Chinese literature in the future.
