In the process of building ancestral temples and renewing genealogies,the Lineage of Boyang Zhu in Chengzi Xian,Laiwu County,central Shandong Province,formed multiple narratives about different branch,such as" Lao Er Zhi " and "Xiao Ba Zhi",which reflected the branch narratives and cultural identity in the construction of northern lineage.They not only endowed different villages with cultural individuality,but also endowed them with more cultural and symbolic capital in the competition and cooperation of inter-village relations.In early Ming dynasty,the ancestors of the Zhu lineage moved to Zhu Jia Zhuang on the Tailai Plain.They made a living by Cultivation and taking part in imperial examinations.In the process of reproduction,there were two important branch nodes for the Zhu lineage:"Lao Er Zhi " appeared during the second generation;two major branches,the Shilu branch and the Shiwei branch,appeared during the fifth generation.At the same time,the Zhu lineage kept moving out.The Shilu branch,who moved to Chengzi Xian,did well in the imperial examinations.Zhu’s lineage hero-Zhu Tong Meng,Jinshi of Wan Li of Ming Dnasty,was nominated as You Douyushi of the Court of Censors.His descendants are called"Xiao Ba Zhi".Chengzi Xian formed a competitive relationship with Zhu Jia Zhuang,the birthplace,by their imperial examination achievements.At present,people of the Zhu Lineage,judging the situation and relying on the cultural capital formed in the historical period,started a new Lineage construction activity,which integrates "Family elite-ancestral hall-genealogy".In this process,the branch concept of Zhu lineage profoundly affected the process of construction.The different branches of the Zhu Lineage,such as "Xiao Ba Zhi","Lao Er Zhi",launched a variety of narratives.In order to construct or reconstruct of rural order,they sometimes invoke "national rites" and sometimes emphasize "folk customs",resulting in various forms of" interaction between etiquette and customs ".With the cultural capital and the economic capital and political capital behind it,"Xiao Ba Zhi" has been prominent in various construction activities.On the contrary,the " Lao Er Zhi "is an ancient branch,but it lacks capital support and has no status in family affairs.Of course,the "Xiao Ba Zhi" also faced challenges from other branches,such as the competition for dominance of the above activities,launched by the third branch of the fifth generation of Shiwei’s descendants,and their internal contradictions were numerous.It was in the cooperation and competition of the branches that the Zhu Lineage realized their cultural identity:ancestral halls and genealogy were repaired and continued.This kind of construction activity is also reflected in daily life.Lineage branches with different surnames in Cheng zi Xian,competing with each other,set up public venues for Lineage activities one after another,and continued to repair the genealogy of the branch.The workings of the surnames’ Red and white councils are also heavily influenced by their branch affiliations.When the state takes the initiative to intervene,a new form of "interaction between etiquette and customs" has been generated.Finally,the cultural personality of the village is revealed,and the relationship between the villages is also shaped.The Zhu Lineage realized cultural identity and Lineage construction in different contexts,by the competition and cooperation of inter-branch relations.Above all,these kinds of construction activities are integrated in the process of Chinese civilization and local social development,and provide life support for both of them.
