| Since the western detective novel was introduced to China by Shiwubao in 1896,detective novel quickly became a new type of novel,highly praised by reformist intellectuals such as Liang Qichao,and even regarded as an important means to inspire the wisdom of the people.In the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,publishers such as World Book Company,Commercial Press,Dah Tung Book Company published a large number of detective books,a batch of specialized detective journals such as Detective World,Detective,New Detective were also founded in succession,for quite a long time,the detective book-journals were very popular in the book-journal market.The popularity of detective book-journals was closely related to the rise of urban society in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.On the one hand,detective novels were introduced into China along with other foreign goods under the historical circumstances of the relaxation of the literary program in the late Qing Dynasty,the opening of ports and the formation of concession.Occurring in the process of urbanization,on the other hand,intellectuals and citizen stratum accepted the new ideology,made detective book-journals have gained many readers and larger social needs,the rise of modern urban society and the formation of the citizenry,provided fertile soil for the publication and circulation of detective book-journals in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.According to the condition of publishing and distribution,the detective book-journals were mainly popular in the urban society,while Shanghai became the publishing center of the detective book-journals in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,because of a lot of detective writers living in Shanghai,and nearly eighty percent of the detective book-journals publishing organizations located in Shanghai,so the detective book-journals wrere mainly published for urban readers.For the citizens living in the urban society in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,on the one hand,reading detective book-journals became an important choice in their daily leisure life;On the other hand,reading detective book-journals was also an important channel for them to acquire scientific knowledge and acquire modern ideas.Detective writers integrated modern individual ideas,legal ideas,rational ideas,and female ideas into detective book-journals in a hidden or explicit way,and realized the interaction between detective book-journals and modern concepts with the help of readers’ reading and interpretation.This interaction made detective book-journal become a representation of modernity,the thing that can make modern society be modern.Based on the detective book-journals published in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,and relevant materials of various newspapers and journals,this dissertation investigates and analyzes the detective book-journals in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China from the theoretical perspective of the history of ideas,with the research methods of literature research and inductive analysis.This dissertation consists of six parts,the first chapter introduces the publication of detective book-journals in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,and the following three chapters show the relationship between detective bookjournals and various ideas from the perspectives of publishers,readers and society.Firstly,this dissertation bases on the novel translation boom and the translation detective novels in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China,discusses and analyzes the publishing and distribution of detective book-journals,finds that their publishing fluctuation has an important relationship with the current social situation,peaks and valleys appeared in a staggered way,generally had appeared three times of publishing peak.Secondly,this dissertation takes the four detective writers and publishers,Liu Bannong,Zhao Shaokuang,Cheng Xiaoqing,Sun Liaohong,as specific cases,discusses their experiences of translating,writing,publishing detective novels,analyzes their ideas of detective novels and their editing ideas while editing detective journals,finds that the detective writers and publishers try to establish a relationship with readers,in the hope of using detective book-journals to influence readers’ ideas and actions.Then this dissertation mainly analyzes the psychological state,purpose and harvest of reading detective book-journals by citizens in urban society based on some cases,and finds that reading detective book-journals has important practical significance,that is,on the one hand,it brings people psychological stimulation,and also promotes the growth of scientific knowledge.On the other hand,it changes people’s original social mentality by spreading modern ideas.In addition,it also discusses the situation of intellectuals’ reading detective book-journals,and finds that the cultural circle in the period of the Late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China have three different ideas about the developing prospect of detective book-journals in China,which are "unlucky theory","lucky theory"and "uncertainly lucky theory".Finally this dissertation discusses the interaction between detective book-journals and modern ideas such as individualism,the rule of law,rationalism,feminism from the perspective of history of ideas,and argues that the detective book-journal has a relation of mutual construction with social life modernity and cultural modernity.And this dissertation points out that detective book-journals can play an important social power in a specific historical period,which is not only the power of words,but also the power of idea. |
