Zhao Shilin(1629-1699),born in He yang,Yunnan Province in the turbulent era of the late Ming Dynasty, suffered many privations. He was intelligent and had read a lot of books since childhood. He was particularly interested in Four Books and the Five Classics, and had a solid foundation in historiography.Prior to the reign of Shunzhi,he passed the provincial civil service examination and was ranked 154 th in the imperial examination. He successively became a new official in Ping yuan,an official in Rongcheng,a capital official, and a governor in Zhejiang and Jiangsu.Zhao Shilin believed that one must first become a scholar in order to cultivate the people, and one must first understand the principles in order to become a scholar. Therefore,he vigorously promoted the style of lectures, personally ascended the podium, and expounded the principles of daily ethics, with the core being the word "respect".The saying goes,"If you don’t show respect, your heart will pamada;if you don’t show respect for a moment, your body will slack;if you don’t show respect for a word, your words will make trouble;if you don’t show respect for a thing, you will regret it." Numerous listeners appreciated him.he became a famous scholar of NeoConfucianism in the early Qing Dynasty,a generation of great Confucians.During a governor of Zhejiang,he obtained outstanding political achievements, and worshipped as a famous official.During his tenure as the Left Assistant Minister of the Ministry of Personnel,he promoted the wise and eliminated the foolish, handled affairs fairly, and was highly appreciated by Emperor Kangxi. In his spare time from work,he only focused on reading and had expertise in poetry, prose, parallel prose, essay and calligraphy. The Creation of Prose and essay followed the footsteps of his predecessors and did not adhere to them, and formed a unique style. He was one of the representative writers of Yunnan origin in the early Qing Dynasty literary world. Before his death, his son Zhao Chenfu and his students compiled the "Complete Collection of Colored Clothes at the Reading Hall"(46 volumes),which was first engraved in the 35 th year of Kangxi(36 years),In the 19 th year of the Guangxu reign,it was published by Zhejiang Book Company.Although social works accounted for a certain proportion,it was unfair to view them as "social works".The first chapter of the paper examines Zhao Shilin’s life, works and social interactions, with a focus on verifying the version of the Complete Collection of Colored Clothes in the Reading Hall and the entanglement between Zhao Shilin and Dai Mingshi;Chapter Two reviews Zhao Shilin’s career as an official, showcasing the charm of a generation of famous officials from three aspects: his official philosophy, local official experiences, and his career as the Beijing official;Chapter Three discusses Zhao Shilin’s Neo Confucianism, tracing its origins and elucidating the essence of his Neo Confucianism and its impact on future generations;Chapter Four is the focus of the paper, mainly demonstrating Zhao Shilin’s literary propositions and his creation of poetry, ode and essay.Zhao Shilin’s literary works have the characteristics of a culmination of Qing Dynasty literature, although not outstanding, they still have their own uniqueness.Zhao Shilin adhered to the philosophy of "he who excels in study can improve an official career, and "he who excels in an official career can strengthen his study"throughout his life.He cared for the world, cared for the people’s livelihoods, took care of his hometown, rewarded those who were backward, and benefited countless people. He made achievements in morality, meritorious service, and speech.Unfortunately, his population was not prosperous, his only son passed away early, and his eldest grandson died young, which made people feel sigh. From these,it can be seen that imperfection is the norm of life, one can integrate into nature only by conforming to nature.Zhao Shilin’s resume is typical among the group of ancient literati.A comprehensive interpretation and careful study of it have reference significance for our daily life and work;He is not only an official, filial son,and strict father, but also a literati and Confucian scholar. He deeply interprets his multiple identities, which also enlightens us in understanding and comprehending life.
