| The strategy of innovation-driven development is crucial for China to seize the initiative in the new round of global technological competition.The high and new-tech industry which is knowledge and technology intensive has become the mainstay and commanding point of independent innovation and a strong driving force for social and economic development.Therefore,enhancing the innovative capabilities of high and new-tech enterprises(HNTEs)has practical significance for strengthening national strategic scientific and technological forces and promoting core technology research and independent innovation.Being the core resource of HNTEs,knowledge base is pivotal to innovation activities.As the knowledge is generally interconnected but not independent in kn owledge base,innovation is regarded as the process of knowledge integration from the perspective of knowledge-based theory.Based on this,this thesis analyzes the evolution of knowledge integration capabilities in different dimensions,and explores the relationship between knowledge integration capabilities and the performance of HNTEs.At the same time,the effectiveness of knowledge integration activities of HNTEs may be subject to specific organizational conditions and closely related to the support of internal and external resources,especialy slack resources and R&D collaboration.This thesis focuses on the impact of knowledge integration capabilities,slack resources and R&D collaboration on the performance of HNTEs,including four main aspects:(1)Constructing a holistic theoretical model of the impact of knowledge integration capabilities on the performance of HNTEs.Knowledge integration consists of two basic components: knowledge elements and the relations between them.Based on whether knowledge elements and their combinations are new in the process of knowledge integration,knowledge integration are divided into four categories: refined knowledge integration,reconstructed knowledge integration,novel knowledge integration and original knowledge integration,which are aligned with exploitative and exploratory innovation.With the connotation of relevant knowledge integration capabilities being defined,the evolution process of different types of knowledge integration capabilities of HNTEs is furt her analyzed.At the same time,on the basis of summing up the internal and external factors that affect the performance of HNTEs,the influence models of knowledge integration capabilities on the performance of HNTEs with slack resources and R&D collabora tion as the moderating variables are constructed.(2)Direct influence of knowledge integration capabilities on the performance of HNTEs.As the innovative kinetic energy,knowledge integration is of great significance to improve the performance of HNTEs.Based on this,the influence mechanism of four knowledge integration capabilities on the performance of HNTEs is analyzed,and then research hypotheses are proposed.Taking HNTEs in China’s manufacturing industry as research samples.The relevant patent data and financial data of listed HNTEs in the manufacturing industry from 2000 to 2017 are obtained from the Intellectual Property Administration and CSMAR Database.Patent data are used to measure knowledge integration capabilities,and Tobin’s Q value clo sely related to corporate technical knowledge to measure the performance of HNTEs.Using random effect model and fixed effect model of negative binomial regression for empirical analysis,the study finds that both the enhancement of refined knowledge integration capability and reconstructed knowledge integration capability based on exploitative innovation improve the performance of HNTEs.The novel knowledge integration capability and original knowledge integration capability based on exploratory innovation have an inverted U-shaped relationship with the performance of HNTEs.(3)The moderating role of slack resources.Knowledge integration activities require the effective deployment of internal resources of HNTEs,and slack resources may affect knowledge integration of HNTEs from different aspects with their contradictory characteristics.Based on this,the contingency role of slack resources in the relationship between knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs is analyzed,and relevant r esearch hypotheses are proposed.Taking the HNTEs in China’s manufacturing industry as the research samples,slack resources are measured by financial indicators-current ratio,asset-liability ratio,and expense-to-income ratio.Using random effect model and fixed effect model of negative binomial regression for empirical analysis,the study finds that slack resources positively moderate both the positive relationship between refined knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs,and between reconstructed knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs;Slack resources strengthen the inverted U-shaped relationship between novel knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs,yet weaken the inverted U-shaped relationship between original knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs.(4)The moderating role of R&D collaboration.Open innovation has become an important way for HNTEs to implement innovations.In the process of cooperating with external organizations,HNTEs often choose different cooperation modes conforming to their own conditions.With differences in the acquisition channels of heterogeneous resources and the transaction costs involved,different cooperation modes have different performances.Based on this,the contingency effects of R&D collaboration breadth and depth on the relationship between knowledge integration capabilities and the performance of HNTEs are analyzed,and relevant research hypotheses are proposed.With the HNTEs in China’s manufacturing industry as the research samples,the breadth and depth of R&D collaboration are measured by the number of companies that jointly apply for patents and the frequency of repeated cooperation.Using random effect model and fixed effect model of negative binomial regression for empirical analysis,the study finds that the breadth and the depth of R&D collaboration negatively and positively moderate the positive relationship between the refined knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs respectively.The breadth of R&D collaboration negatively moderates the positive relationship between reconstructed knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs,yet the depth of R&D collaboration has no significant impact on the relationship between reconstructed knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs.The breadth of R&D collaboration has no significant impact on the relationship between novel knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs,yet the depth o f R&D collaboration negatively moderates the positive relationship between novel knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs.The breadth and the depth of R&D collaboration strengthens and weakens the positive relationship between origina l knowledge integration capability and the performance of HNTEs respectively.Focusing on the knowledge integration capabilities from the perspective of dual innovation,this thesis constructs an overall theoretical framework of the relationship among knowledge integration capabilities,slack resources,R&D collaboration and the performance of HNTEs.(1)Combing the essence of innovation under the knowledge-based theory and the characteristics of dual innovation,this study divides knowledge integration capabilities into four types based on exploitative and exploratory innovation.Illustrated by the example of HNTEs,the evolution process of the four types of knowledge integration capabilities is analyzed to reveal their characteristics and dynamic changes,which is helpful to enrich and expand the related research of knowledge integration theorically and empirically.(2)Based on the practical needs of HNTEs in the context of transitional economy,the impacts of different types of knowledge integration capabilities on the performance of HNTEs are discussed separately,which helps to further promote the theoretical integration between knowledge-based view and enterprise performance.(3)The development of knowledge integration activities is closely related to the deployment of internal resources and the acquisition of external resources,therefore slack resources and R&D collaboration are utilized as contingency factors into the whole theoretical framework,which enriches corporate performance-related research from the perspective of knowledge management.The research conclusions provide HNTEs with references to cultivate knowledge integration capabilities for dual innovation and adjust both internal and external resources to improve performances and achieve breakthroughs.The managers of HNTEs could carry out different knowledge integrat ion activities and choose optimal knowledge integration for effectively improving performances in consideration of internal redundant resources and collaborative relationship with external enterprises. |
