The map is important in society. In forestry, map also occupies an important position, the all levels forest division, forest planning, the forest resources inventory, The forest management inventory, felling series design etc. to all can not get away from the map.The current forestry mapping already has adopted the technique of GIS extensively, this makes the quantity and speed of the forestry mapping improve a lot. The Thematic mapping function has been one of the GIS main functions, along with the technical advance in GIS, its mapping function of establishing mapping automation software based on GIS is more and more powerful, which can rely on the GIS spacial database, shorten the graphics period , increase mapping quantity and economize mapping cost. The technique of GIS makes automation level of Thematic mapping increase consumedly, GIS system have been extensively applied by the map-producers and become an important tool in Thematic mapping .But in the aspects of Thematic mapping automation, mapping system based on GIS still has many limitations, Particularly the Thematic map type and sign automation need manual disposal to be realized .That is the problem that researchers of GIS must resolve in the future. Because the general GIS is not the professional software for forestry, It is deficient in forestry business. Its complexity of the software operation and the limitation make the application of GIS infrequent in native forestry department. Therefore, The research of the professional mapping system of the forestry has important practical and theoretical meanings.The traditional mapping system usually bases on single platform.Single platform has limitations such as functional simplex, being unable to make use of the system resources and deficiency of Thematic mapping. Using technique of cross-platform mapping automation can overcome the above problems . While developing mapping system, a perfect mapping system can be finally accomplished with the method of the cross-platform (using the GIS software and visual language at the same tune namely) to integrate all the advantages of each form so as to integratefriendly interface with powerfully mappings function.OLE Automation technique is the core of ActiveX that can make an object be shared expediently by the programmes.Cross-platform mapping system is established by the integration of both GIS and visiual language that based on the technique of OLE Automation.The latter part of the article expatiates the primarily techniques of the cross-platform automated forestry mapping .Template technique: For the majority of the common forestry workers, it is impossible to have a certain degree of graphics knowledge and the forestry professional knowledge . For that reason, The "Automation of Cross-platform Forestry Mapping " adoptes the template technique and establishes the database of the forestry map template .The forestry sign database is established according to the principle of information share .Make use of twice developments to make up the shortage of MapInfo in forestry map expressing.
