At the end of year 2001, China Reading Newspaper and Newton Scientific World co-organized the second secession of Newton Cup Popular Science Book Prize. As one of the 32 kinds of translated books, Genetic Engineering-Dream or Nightmare, written by Mae-Wan Ho, a Chinese-British, was also on the list. The book triggered a violent academic argument in The Scientific and Cultural Circles, called "dream incident". The incident hascovered a wide field and exerted influence on The Scientific and Cultural Circles. The recounting and analyzing of the "dream incident", reflects the fact that there exists scientism in China and has a deep-rooted influence, it is of special significance and research value to the consideration of the two cultures, in the unique Chinese circumstances against international backgrounds. The thesis gives systematic and all-round analysis on the "dream incident", involving the background, the cause and effect of the argument and the focus of argument, and analyze the essence and deep reasons of the incident and the influence resulted from the incident .The thesis has a rational thinking and analysis about the scientism indicated in the "dream incident". The thesis studies and discusses the basis, the background and the defination of the scientism, the theoretic origins, historical origins and real backgrounds of the times and its deep influence on the aspects of theory and social practice in China. The last part of the thesis briefly discusses the deeper thinking resulted from the "dream incident", i.e. the dissolving of the scientists aiming at the realization of the harmony of science and humanity.
