Mobile Phone & GIS Application Development

GIS (Geographic Information System) has a very close connection with peoples' daily life and plays a very important role in model information society. It is widely used in varies industry fields. Embed GIS is a new kind of GIS application, which extends GIS fields. Mobile phone & GIS application is one kind of Mobile GIS , a kind of Embed GIS . It bases on mobile phone which has J2ME environment, so people needn't to buy expensive GIS device, as long as their mobile phones support Java , they can enjoy the basic GIS function, for example : view the map, zoom in/out the map and search Information through keywords.This paper presents a client GIS application running inside mobile phones and its background platform. This application was developed upon J2ME platform and communicated to a Maplnfo GIS data server. J2ME is a cutting edge platform used to develop wireless application, but it has a low-level GUI. So I design and realize a set of LWT (Lightweight Window Toolkit). And I also develop GIS Agent for Maplnfo Xtreme for Java to extend it to fit wireless GIS development.
