With the rapid development of industrialization and urbanization, and with the raising of comprehensive discharge standards of wastewater, it becomes a trend for wastewater plants to employ new process with biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity in our country. So, it is of great importance to develop an economical and efficient process, which can remove nitrogen and phosphorus with small volume.MSBR (Modified Sequencing Batch Reactor) process is a kind of new wastewater treatment technology in present, it has the biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal capacity. In fact, MSBR process can be considered as a combination of A2/O process with SBR process. With a cubic structure, MSBR process is made of seven individual cells. MSBR process can run continuously without interrupting influent. On the basis of the study conditions of MSBR process in our country, a new kind of work course of MSBR process, which is different with the current one, is put forward and experimental studies are conducted. In this paper, the kinetics of nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal are analyzed and the working course of MSBR process is detailed introduced firstly. Then the nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency of MSBR process in different SRT, and the characters of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in MSBR process are investigated through experiments. Researches show that ingenious arrangement for each treatment tank and the setting-concentrating tank can better solve the problem between nitrogen removal and phosphorus removal. Meanwhile, the comfortable surroundings for nitrification ,denitrification bacteria and phosphotrophs are achieved in MSBR process. So, MSBR process has the good ability in nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In addition, SBR further enhances the removal efficiencies, in which reaction alternates with settling. The experimental results indicate, under a condition of: SRT=15d, PH=7~8, T=25℃, anaerobic tank's HRT=60min, anoxic/anaerobic tank's HRT=30min, the removal efficiency of the COD, P, NH4-N is 94.2%, 88.5%, 81.4% respectively, which prove MSBR process to be a good means for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. In the end, some suggestions on applying MSBR process to practice are provided.
