Ink jet printing, a kind of burgeoning textile processing technique, presents the development direction of printing and dyeing industry. The key point of ink jet printing is preparation of ink. As for pigment ink, the preparation of ultra-fine partical and its dispersability are the most important factors in determining the properties of ink.In this paper, a water-soluable quaternized polymeric dispersant was synthesized; and by varying the ratio of monomers and the amount of initiator, the effect of polymeric dispersant's structure on dispersability was systematically explored; also, the application conditions of polymeric dispersant in ultra-fine pigment aqueous system were investigated in details. By FT-IR and 13C NMR spectrum, the structure of SMD was confirmed to be a trimonomer ; Gel Penetration Chromometer indicates that the weight molecular of SMD is 5943, and the molecular weight distribution is 1.32; The weight percentage of hydrophilic monomer is about 71.83% as measured by Titration Method. The result shows that as the percentage of hydrophilic monomer increases, the dispersability of SMD shows the trend of going first up and then down. So does the effect of initiator. The Scanning Electron Microscope pictures show that SMD exhibits better dispersability to low-polar organic pigment.
