With the development of the industry, the petroleum resource become scare andcostliness, so all of the countries in the world begin to strengthen their oil storage tactics, which embody the appearance of bigger storage tanks and more storage manners.Consequently, storage tank's security becomes more important. Fireproof distance is animportant parameter for petro-chemical enterprise design, because it is not only relativeto the security of storage tanks but also the total invest, the running cost and the wholebenefit of the company. Therefore, as a design parameter relating to the benefit of thewhole enterprise, fireproof distance is attracting more and more concerns. Researchnamed "A Study on the basic theory of distance between two adjacent storage tanks onpool fire condition" is appearance as a landscape orientation study problem. So far, no explicit reports and documents have been found on how to determinefireproof distance reasonably. Based on engineering practices and expert experiences, some principles and basis of fireproof distance are established in our national standards, and the distance of storage tank above earth has been provided definitely. In the paper, the physical chemistry phenomena of pool fire in the storage tank field will be analyzedand interpreted using hydrodynamics and combustion knowledge. Based on the previouswork, the heat radiation to the environment from pool fire will be numerically simulatedusing CFD software. The minimum safety distance between two tanks will be therebysuggested based on the heat radiation guide line.In the paper, a review about the fireproof distance actuality in home and abroad, correlative laws, codes, science studies and accident statistics was finished. A newmethod about how to establish a fireproof distance reasonably was put forward. CFDtechnology and the function and development about Fluent software were introduced. Areview about the validity of the CFD software and that of Fluent in fire simulation wasfinished. Then some theory analysis about combustion and radiation of pool fire werecarried out, UDF in Fluent was introduced at length, and an example was made. IIIABSTRACTBased on the previous study, some theoretic suppositions and analysis about theflame shape of pool fire without wind were carried out, and physical and geometrical tothe shape were established. The heat radiation to environment from the pool fire wasthereby numerical simulated using Fluent software and choosing appropriate radiationmodel. Therefore, the influence field of heat radiation and minimum safety distancebetween two adjacent manganese steel spherical tanks, storage propane, with diameter13m were suggested. In order to make the simulation more exact, The flame shape, thespace distributing of the temperature and production concentration, was numericallysimulated at first in the paper when study the pool fire with cross wind. The flame shapewas attained thereby. Then the heat radiation to environment form pool fire with crosswind was simulated, and the influence field of heat radiation and minimum safetydistance between two adjacent manganese steel spherical benzene tanks with diameter20m were suggested.A conceive about how to established fireproof distance reasonably was developed inthe paper. The simulation of pool fire was finished using Fluent. A numerical simulationmethod about how to establish minimum safety distance of pool fire and how to evaluatethe fatalness of pool fire was offered. The study in the paper is a valid attempt to studythe fireproof distance using CFD method, which offered a new thought way to study inthe other style disaster about storage tank.
