Because of automobile body covering are inefficient and great difficult to the traditional design and inspecting method. How to use another effective method to replace traditional way and to increase inspecting precision becomes an urgent problem to be solved for manufacturers. Through analyzing the software "Geomagic" function and fundamental, this paper studies the key technology of complicated surface, described in detail the reverse engineering technology: point data obtaining, surface reconstruction, surface analysis etc, provides theory and technology foundation for applying reverse engineering to the model design and inspection of car body covering. This paper takes the achievement of reverse engineering which applies on the car body covering model as a goal, carries out research aim at the reconstruction problem of free curved surfaces of body coverings based on scattered points. Through applying reverse design to car body covering, obtains 3D curved surface reconstruction of car body covering. this project establishes the base of further design of successive CAD/CAM systems. On the basis of reverse engineering and error inspection theory, this project brings forward digitized inspection method which applies reverse engineering to car body covering. Through establishing curved surface mating , putting points data and theory model to error comparison and obtains inspect report. This method can inspect sufficient accuracy complicated surface error that traditional method can't meet sufficient accuracy requirements. It has important application prospect to carry out the manufactured on-line automation and digitization.
