Laser carving technology is an applied technique developed in the 1980's. But its application range has widely expanded combined with CAD, computer graphic, industrial automation, information technology etc. Laser carving system for rapid digital image is one of laser carving applications, which derived from computer integrated numerical control system based on digital image processing, and widely used in product design and manufacturing based on digital image. This system has become popular in industry. Laser carving system is different from CAD/CAM system. It can deal with huge source data and produce G code of manufacturing information. It is very important both in theory study and production practice for its high efficiency. The author has taken part in the development and application of this system.1. The methods of numerical controlling-oriented digital image processing have been researched in this dissertation. Digital image processing technology, bitmap studying, digital image processing methods for rapid digital image laser carving system are discussed.2. By research on the basic theory and technology the author presents open CNC system, its construction and operating theory, which involve vector manufacturing and direct image manufacturing.3. The author describes the development and implementation of laser carving system for rapid digital image. Various function models are discussed and the methods have been described how to implement these functions.4. From the above explanation and the machinery components developed by the author, the whole frame of laser carving system for rapid digital image has been obtained, a manufacturing instance of these systems provided here.Finally, the author summarizes the main conclusions and suggests possible future research directions.
