As one main type of gear drives, worm drive is used in many industries, such as metallurgy, mine, transportation, chemical industry, national defense etc. Therefore, many researches have been taken on the theory and manufacture of worm transmission, including the research on new tooth profile, new drive type, tooth cutting and measuring, lubrication, material and heat treatment, design, calculation, simulation analysis and optimization. But there are still some respects need more investigation.Formulas are given in many mechanical manuals to calculate the tooth thickness at only the reference circle of worm and worm wheel. In some cases, the procedure to calculate the tooth thickness at any position along the whole tooth profile is necessary. For example, when designing worm wheel cutting hob or flying blade, the axial plane or normal plane tooth thickness of worm at any position must be known. On the other hand, for a worm wheel with large profile shift, the reference circle is usually very close to the root circle or tip circle. This makes the tooth thickness measuring at the reference circle difficult or even impossible. In this case, the practical way is to take the measurement near the middle point of the tooth depth. So the worm wheel tooth thickness at a specific tooth height must be calculated. The main works and the new ideas of this thesis are summarized as follows:...
