In recent years, honing has developed into a kind of cutting-edge technology which can accomplish large material removal and high efficiency. Foreign advanced honing technique can achieve higher honing efficiency than domestic one. Therefore, how to improve honing efficiency has become a focus of research in our country.Honing process is very complex and is influenced by many factors. Among them, honing stone is one of the most important factors to influence honing efficiency. In this paper, the honing performance, microstructure and wear-failure mechanism of commonly used honing stone particles such as alumina, silicon carbide, diamond and cubic boron nitride (CBN) are compared. Domestic Al2O3 honing stone and imported Al2O3 honing stone are selected to conduct honing experiment to compare their honing efficiency. It was found that the honing efficiency of imported honing stone is two or three times higher than that of domestic honing stone. The paper also studies the micro-mechanism which causes the above differences. Scanning electron microscope(SEM )is used to analyze the surface characteristics of domestic and imported honing stones. It can be easily observed that the number of abrasive particles in imported honing stone is much more than that in domestic honing stone. Besides, based on the theory of elasto-plasticity and tribology, the paper establishes a theoretical model to predict material removal rate in honing process. The model clearly shows that material removal rate is proportional with the number of the active particles in the surface of honing stone. This proportional relation is indirectly validated by some experiments of chemical-mechanical polishing for the effect of particle concentration on the polish rate. Most importantly, the model strongly indicates that the much more number of working abrasive particles on the surface of imported honing stone is the main reason to cause much higher honing efficiency. The achievements made in this research will provide a updated technical guidance to produce honing stones in our country and provide a platform on which to further enhance honing efficiency in the future.
