The technology of numerical control (NC) profile grinding is a new kind of process developed rapidly by many countries in recent years. It is widely used in mechanical engineering because of its high efficiency and precision. Based on the foreground of its great application, this paper discussed the surface roughness of the ground workpiece, which is less investigated abroad and at home. Using diamond idler wheel for turing and dressing the grinding wheel is a primary approach . The track of diamond idler wheel will directly affect the surface roughness of the grinding wheel while turning and dressing . The grining process parameters will also affect the surface roughness of the ground workpiece. Experimental investigations on the influence of both grinding process parameter and turning and dressing on the surface roughness of the ground workpiece are conducted.Based on the literature reviews , the paper puts forward the preliminary analysis for the formining principle of surface roughness of the ground workpiece .The influence of surface roughness on the strength, hardness , corrosion resistance ,wear resistance of the workpiece surface .The principle of the profile grinding is described in this paper that the ground surface is a result from the comprehensive influences of the grinding process parameter and the surface quality of the grinding wheel on the ground workpiece . In this experiment , the workpiece surface roughness was measured by electric profile apparatus.This paper discussed the surface roughness of the alloy tool steel accuratly ground. Firstly, the influences of grinding process parameters on the surface roughness was studied. Then, the truing and dressing of the diamond idler wheel was deduced and analyzed, which verified the influencess of the truing and dressing and grinding process parameters on the surface roughness of the ground workpiece. This paper proposed the regression equation that reflecting the qualitative relation between roughness Rα and grinding process parameters by orthogonal regression technique, and deduced the model expression: Rα =234×Vs-0.45×V<sup>0.08 ×αp0.15. This paper was used to confirm the relation of grinding process parameters and surface roughness Rα, also can be used to forecast the Rα in practical application. This paper measurated therelation of the dressing velocity ratio q, feed rate fd and the surface roughness while investigating the relation of curvature radius p and dressing velocity ratio q on one point. Finally some reasonable truing and dressing parameters and grinding process parameters were found in this paper.
