With the progressive development of printing techniques, the techniques of computer-to-plate, computer-to-printing and digital printing have been used into practice. Digital camera and color reproduction are becoming more and more wide—spread. Color reproduction is no longer a domain of specially-trained experts but is a facility required by a large audience. Hence, it is of importance to provide a good color management system for color reproduction and any such system will necessarily have to include gamut mapping as an essential feature.When a color image from one color reproduction medium needs to be reproduced on another and these media have different color ranges, it is necessary to have a method for mapping between them. If such a gamut mapping algorithm can be used under a wide range of conditions, it can also be incorporated in an automated color reproduction system and considered to be in some sense universal.The paper at first made a description of why we need color management and color gamut mapping, and then made deep researches on the technology of color management and gamut mapping, finally, a number of previously published algorithms were chosen and evaluated. A new algorithm was then developed on their basis, which gave the most accurate and stable performance.
