The color imaging reproduction played a great role in promoting social development and progress of civilization. Traditional color printing is mainly four-color overprint technology using color separation and screens, it can obtain high quality color printing by maturity technology and experience. But there are still some defects, and thus multi color printing as a hot issue on the development of printing technology has been more and more popular, and it is paid more attention.This paper analyzed the traditional theory and combines the latest study on the development of multi-color printing, and the seven-color separation was put forward based on the Neugebauer model in four-color printing and the existing six-color separation algorithm. We transform the color of each pixel in the original image into chromatic value of CIEXYZ and CIELab space, and divided the whole region constituted by seven-color into six sub-regions, so that we can reproduce the color utilizing the three primary color during the sub-regional, and it expanded the color gamut.Finally, according to the methods of experimental design, we tested the samples printed respectively by four-color and seven-color printing. The results showed the color gamut was expanded significantly by seven-color printing. It can not only reproduce some colors with high saturation, but also to some extent, eliminated the effects of metamerism.
