Fuel additive is one of most effective ways to improve the performance ofgasoline. Adding the bio-additive to the gasoline could solve the problem of thepollution to the environment and the poison to the after treatment of the tetraethyl leadand MTBE. The bio-additive is renewable and also friendly to the environment. Inorder to displace MTBE and to realize the sustainable developments of energy source,the bio-additive has a good future.In this dissertation, one bio-additive extracted up from tropic plant can improvethe gasoline burning efficiency. The bio-additive were added into four kinds ofcommercial gasoline of 93#, which are called super-clean gasoline, prime gasoline,prime gasoline with known components and ethanol-gasoline respectively. Throughengine bench tests, the fuel economy and emissions with and without the bio-additivewere compared and analyzed. In addition, one coupling additive compounded by onedetergent and one bio-additive was tested on testing bench on fuel economy andemissions of gasoline engine.The results showed that when the engine runs on the fuel with the bio-additive,the fuel economy was improved effectively, especially to the ethanol-gasoline. Withthe bio-additive, the fuel economy can reach to the level of the prime gasoline. Whenthe bio-additive adding into the super-clean gasoline and prime gasoline knowncomponents that both are with 93# octane number respectively, the engine emissionslike carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NOx) were reduced, only exceptunburned hydrocarbon (HC) increased slightly. What's more, the bio-additive showsits remarkable characteristic that can decrease CO2 emissions from gasoline engines.For the ethanol-gasoline, when adding the bio-additive, the NOx emissions remainedthe same level as usual, but HC and CO2 increased compared with the basic fuel.When the engine used the additive composed, which were composed by the fueldetergent and the bio-additive, the fuel economy of two kinds of gasoline which wereboth with 93# octane number respectively were improved remarkably, with thereduction of all kinds of emissions and the benefit to environment. In addition, theadditive composed not only holds primary functions of two components but also givesfurther improvement in fuel economy. Meanwhile, the composite additive has anobviously endurable behavior that is good to fuel economy. After freezing test, thefunctions of the coupling additive were not affected.Through research on the feasibility of the bio-additive and the composite additiveto different kinds of gasoline in our present market, it can be found that thebio-additive is effective to fuel economy and emissions. Therefore the bio-additive isnot only significant to reduce greenhouse gases, but also is very important tosustainable development of fuel sources.
