Photochromic compounds have attracted great attention due to their potential applications as reversible photo-mode, photo-switch devices and rewritable memory, etc. Many approaches to improve their photochromic properties such as fatigue resistance and photostability and to develop new photochromic system have been carried out.In this thesis, the recent developments of the synthesis and the photochromic behavior of photochromic materials, especially spiropyran, spirooxazine and fulgide were reviewed. A series of spiropyrans, spirooxazines and fugimides containing some functional groups such as OH, NH2, COOH were designed and synthesized. Each two of the three kinds of photochromic compounds was connected through the functional groups and afforded a series of novel unsymmetrical bis-photochromic compounds possessing spiro-photochromic and fulgimidic moieties. The photochromic behaviors of the synthesized new compounds in different solvents were investigated. It was found that the bis-photochromic compounds showed different absorption peaks from their parent compounds. The stability of colored form and the fatigue resistance were much better compared with their parent compounds.
