To the sport on ice, skates are the key factor to win for athlete. Its grindingqulity includes the following factors such as the surface's coarse degree, the sharpquality of the edge of skates, the state of the edge, and the radian, shape, arc length,arc highness and the tip arc position of skates etc. The influence of these factors onspeed, technology and tactical exertion of sliding is quite important. However,these parameters and states can hardly achieve high-point if they only depend ongrinding by hand, observing by eyes and experiences of athlete. So it is verynecessary to research and manufacture a sort of portable skates grinding machine.To the situation at present, there are no correlative reports about the portableskates grinding machine in home and overseas. The method of grinding skates byhand is widely adopted. Due to the lacking individual experience, the inconsistentoperating technology and skill, the parameters of skates can hardly reach theperfect state. And the precision after grinding is difficult to guarantee. That is to say,grinding once, the shape is one. In this way the behindhand method and means ofgrinding are difficult to satisfy the need of the physical culture development of ourcountry.During the design and manufacture of the portable skates grinding machine,the too long period of traditional method is difficult to guarantee the design qualityof products. Based on the above factors, the virtual manufacturing technology isintroduced in the design and manufacture of the portable skates grinding machine.Using virtual manufacturing technology, the manufacture process of products andthe influence of kinds of activities in the products' lifecycle on products' design canbe timely and synchronously simulated in virtue of the modeling and simulationtechnology during the design of products. The problems which maybe occur duringmanufacture will be discovered. And the precautionary measures can be takenbefore the products' actual manufacture. Consequently the products can bemanufactured successfully at first. And the purpose of reducing cost, shortening theperiod of products' development and enhancing competition of products can berealized.Virtual assembly technology is one of the key technologies of virtualmanufacturing. Virtual assembly is physics realization dispensing with products orsupporting process. It only needs project decision-making related to assembly usingcomputer to arrange or assist by means of analyzing and examining model inadvance, viewable in eyes and data expression. Virtue assembly is a kind oftechnology which integratively uses CAD, viewable technology, simulation,dicision-making thoery, research of assembly and manufacture process and virtualreality technology and so on. In this paper, virtual assembly technology is appliedto design and manufacture the portable skates grinding machine. And the system'sstructure of the virtual assembly system of the portable skates grinding machine isprimarily set up by analyzing the research about virtual assembly technology andvirtual manufacturing technology in home and overseas.In this paper, the system design of portable skates grinding machine ofnumerical control and the detailed design of the headstock are given based onthoroughly analyzing the different activities that skates grinding needs, andaccording to the different demand that skates grinding aims at the differentactivities and the characteristic of skates grinding activities.The modeling technology is one of the key technologies of virtualmanufacturing. The development of modeling technology will directly affect on thevirtual manufacturing process. At first the 3D modeling software is needed toconstruct virtue model during the configuration of virtual assembly environment.Then the assembly simulation can be carried out based on it. Along with thedevelopment of 3D technology and the advancing rate of capability-price of thecomputer, the 3D model of mechanical accessories and parts can be constructedusing 3D modeling software in PC and then virtual assembled and simulated.In this paper, the virtual assembly of headstock of grinding machine isachieved in Pro/E system enviroment, and the interference checkout is carried out.It can't dynamic simulate the assembly process but only shows the assembly result.The dynamic simulation of the headstock assembly process is achieved in virtual ofVRML, which dynamic performance and alternating capability are quite strong. Inmechanical engineering field, VRML is widely used to carry out the virtualassembly of mechanical product. The validity of assembly design and operation canbe validated using VRML. And it has very important meaning to find the problemsof assembly as soon as possible, amend the model and lay out the product based onWeb.The above virtual assembly process is shown in figure 1.In a word, the virtual assembly simulation of the headstock of skates grindingmaching is achieved through constructing virtual assembly system in this paper.The rationality of the design is proved. It has guidance meaning to design skatesgrinding machine. And the purpose on shortening the period of productdevelopment, reducing cost of development is reached.
