In this paper, the starting materials, core of steel wire, copper and brass pipe for cladding layer, was drawn through a number of dies and proceeded intermediate heat treatments. The brass cladding steel and brass-copper cladding steel composites were made, which showed well comprehensive properties. Interface diffusion behaviors of composite electrode wire have been investigated by means of optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), torsion and shear tests. The influences of process parameters include surface preparation method, cold deformation, diffusion temperature and time. Furthermore, the influences of heat treatment, drawing ratio and volume ratio on tensile strength, conductivity and comprehensive properties were studied. The effect mechanics were analyzed. The results showed that the brass-clad steel had well metallurgical bonded. Bonding intensity was strengthen with annealing temperature rising from 400℃ to 800℃ and prolonging annealing time from 30 min to 240 min. Meanwhile, considering energy consumption, appropriate annealing temperature (600℃) and annealing time (60 min) were selected. The conductivity of material decreases with the increment of deformation ratio. Conductivity was increased with the increase of volume ratio, annealing temperature and annealing time. However, the opposite tendency of the variation of tensile strength with proceeding factor is observed. The tensile strength of drawing wire can reach 1421 MPa. And the highest relative conductivity can reach 30%IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard). The effects of cold drawing on the properties of electrode wire have been investigated. During cold working, Fe3C grains were thin and arrange along deformation direction. The β-CuZn is aligned along the drawing direction and elongated into filaments which improve the strength of composite wire. After the processes of cold drawing and heat treatments, the samples show higher electrical conductivity.
