The first procedure of traditional morphological analysis on cotton fibers was to acquire some fiber images by microscope. Then researchers made a rough estimate at these fibers and got some indirected indexes to describe the character of cotton fibers. But these ways were not enough accurate and enough quick to describe the character and the quality of cotton fibers. In fact, because of different sort or different climate or different producing region, cotton fibers presented different character and different quality. In our research or our real practice we usually need the exact character of cotton fibers to analyse or deside them further. The cotton maturity was the primary quality index in the fibers examination. In the past, people examined the cotton maturity by old apparatus or by hands and eyes, and they assessed maturity of cotton fibers. But the description of cotton fibers was not enough exact. Actually, because of the difference of examiner and the variety of examining means, there are great discrepancies in the examination. So this examining method was not scientific or objective. In order to solve these problems, we used the computer and image processing technique to analyse and process the cross-sectional images of cotton fibers, and described the maturity or the character of cotton fibers accurately. In this research, we did some experiments of cross-sectional slice about cotton fibers, and got some images of fiber cross-sections. Then we used a microscope to magnify fiber cross-sections samples, and a CCD camera to resolve images, and a Turesion VISTA frame grabber to digitize the images, and a host computer to process the images and to extract the character and to caculate the character indexes. In this research, we analysed cotton fibers and compared coloured cotton fibers with white cotton fibers, and then we got many conclusions. After anslysis we got the conclusion. The roundness of white cotton was bigger than coloured cotton. The lumen of white cotton fibers was smaller than coloured cotton fiber, and the thickness of the fiber wall was thickest. Maturity of white cotton was best. The roundness of brown cotton was bigger than green cotton, and the lumen was smaller, and the thickness of the fiber wall was thicker. Maturity was better. However, the roundness of green cotton was small, and the lumen was large, and the thickness of the wall was thinnest. The shape of fiber...
