There are many factors influencing the quality of printing paper. Pigments is the the most important factor under the same condition of printing machine and others. As new pigments developed in the 1970s, plastic pigments generally have hollow sphere and solid bead. This paper researches how mixed coating pigments of plastic and inorganic pigments effect the paper's printability and quality, and compares the differences of hollow sphere and solid bead. This paper researches paper printability including three parts:surface strength, ink absorptivity and paper surface efficiency; Printing effect research include three parts:printing gloss, color density and color deviation, color efficiency, gray level.Research shows:adding plastic pigments to inorganic pigments could improves printing performance even under less finishing requirment.Hollow sphere and solid bead have their own merits and faults. Hollow sphere is better than solid bead in terms of paper surface efficiency, printing gloss, color efficiency, gray level; However, solid bead works better in aspects of surface strength, ink absorptivity and color deviation. In addition, finding the relationship between ink quantity needed and color density through the plastic pigments experiment.According to the comparison of inorganic pigments before and after adding plastic pigments using SEM,this paper analyze the principles of plastic pigments effecting coated paper printability and printing quality. Analysis indicates adding plastic pigment improves coated layer smoothness and impact pigment particles. Ball-shaped particles not only have low density, but also have thermoplastic in nature. In the finishing process, some press can make particles tighter, and particle's shape changes. So it can upgrade coated paper's printing performance. Mixing plastic pigments and inorganic pigments can reduce the need of finishing requirement.
